HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Derek L. Short, a 45-year-old Mechanicsville man, is currently in jail awaiting a bond hearing after being accused of producing and distributing child pornography.

8News reviewed the details behind Short’s arrest on Tuesday.

Short is charged with creating child pornography then sharing it with a man he met on Facebook. The victim, according to police, is an 8-year-old relative. In the photo, the boy is “nude from the waist down.”

Detectives have screenshots of text messages between the two men where Short admits to molesting the child.

The man communicating with Short told him he’s “disgusted” and that Short is “offensive and sick.”

The man, who lives hundreds of miles away, ultimately calls the police and turns Short in.

He first tried his local police department but was told there was nothing they could do. The man then reached out to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Short is now in jail facing three felony charges and could face additional charges.

8News visited Short’s home and spoke to his mother, who said she doesn’t know what to think of the charges against her son. She did say she believes people are innocent until proven guilty.

Short has a bond hearing on Thursday.
