BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities say five people are injured after gunfire erupted at a party in Brunswick County over Memorial Day weekend.
According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call at 12:59 a.m. Sunday.
Officers arrived at the 800 block of Alvis Road after reports of 50 shots fired by multiple shooters at a gathering of 150 to 200 people. The caller reported multiple people had been shot.
“A bunch of young guys just started shooting randomly in the air. Everyone started running,” a witness said.
Shortly after the shooting, three of the gunshot victims arrived at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, the sheriff office said.
They have been identified as Janie Smith, 22, of Lawrenceville, Virginia; Teairha Bennett, 26, of Henderson, NC; and Tammy Clary, 44, of LaCrosse, Virginia.
Smith was later flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond and Clary was transported to VCU Medical Center via ambulance.
The witness told 8News his sister was shot during the incident.
“Three women were shot in the head. My sister was shot in the back,” the witness said. “A couple of people got ran on top of in chaos, a couple of cars got shot up.”
Two of the other gunshot victims, identified as 31-year-old Darius Hendricks and Antonio Atcherson, 19, both from Emporia, Virginia, were found inside a vehicle at a North Carolina rest area. They were flown to Duke University Hospital.
The sheriff’s office says all the victims are in stable condition.
Deputies later charged Isaiah Stith, 21, of Lawrenceville, Virginia and Maurice Webb, 18, of Lynchburg, Virginia. Stith was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and reckless handling of a firearm. Webb was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
“I think it’s upsetting. It kind of pissed me off. You want to do what’s right, you want to find the guys that did the shooting,” a witness said.
Both Webb and Stith are being held without bond at Meherrin River Regional Jail.
During the investigation, the sheriff’s office says multiple people were interviewed and it was determined that O’Dayle Evans, 28, of Lawrenceville, Virginia, was in possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was charged with that offense.
The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing and more charges will be sought.
