Henrico man gets 35 years for raping elderly neighbor, leaving her to die in burning home

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Henrico County man who was convicted of brutally beating and raping his elderly neighbor before leaving her to die in her burning home will spend the next 35 years behind bars.

Wyndell Brownie, 41, was convicted last January of abduction, assault, rape, arson and burglary after authorities say he brutally attacked his 78-year-old neighbor Highland Springs neighbor in October 2017. A judge on Thursday sentenced him to 35 years in prison.

Court documents obtained by 8News outline the disturbing ordeal.

The victim told police that Brownie came into her home at around 10:30 p.m., dragged her into her bedroom and raped her. She added that when she tried to press her medical alert bracelet, Brownie became irate and beat her. She said she 'blacked out' after he wrapped the cord of an iron around her neck.

It wasn't until 5 a.m. the next morning when someone spotted smoke and firefighters found the victim. According to the warrant, Brownie set several fires inside and outside the house.
