HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Henrico County Police Department is investigating a shooting in the county’s west end.
According to police, officers responded to Silver Stream Lane near Cooper Mill Trace and West Broad Street for an unrelated incident around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Once on the scene, a shooting broke out between two people nearby.
Police tried to intervene and prevent the two shooters from firing at each other. During that time, a Henrico County Police Officer fired their weapon.
One man was hurt and taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not indicated who fired the shot that injured the man.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, police explained there were three male suspects involved in an attempted robbery, two of which who shot at each other.
One of the shooters ran away and temporarily escaped custody. As of Wednesday evening, all three suspects are in custody.
There are charges pending for the men.
Police were unable to tell 8News if something like the two shooters threatening officials at the scene prompted the officer to fire their weapon.
The shooting has prompted a large police presence including numerous officers, over 10 police vehicles and a mobile police command center.
Broad Street was closed between Pemberton Road and West End Drive. As of 5:15 p.m., Broad Street has been reopened,
Officers at the scene seem to be focusing their investigation on the Copper Mill apartment complex. People trying to return home to the complex have not be able to get inside for hours.
Police tell 8News that this is not an active shooter type situation.
