RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Richmond mother is grieving the tragic loss of her son over the weekend.
Police found 37-year-old Jerson White shot in an alley in the Fan District.
At about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 2000 block of Parkwood Avenue for the report of random gunfire. When officers arrived, they were told that a shooting occurred in the rear alley between Parkwood and West Cary streets. He died at the hospital from his injuries.
The shooting happened a block away from the home of Florence Leonard, White’s mother.
Leonard says she and her children are shattered. They are still processing Jerson’s untimely death.
“I still don’t believe it, I really don’t,” she said.
Leonard said she went outside to take the trash out and police were outside.
According to Leonard, White left her house to check on his nephew. She’d later find out the crime scene in front of her doorstep involved her son.
“This don’t seem real, you know,” Leonard said. “I can’t believe he’s gone, just going to check on somebody, but that’s how crazy and cruel people are these days.
Family members gathered to look at photos and laugh over memories, holding onto what made White special to them. However, they say thinking of Jerson comes with pain.
The medical examiner will determine a cause of death.
Jerson’s mother told 8News her son suffered from a gunshot to the stomach.
