Juvenile arrested in Shockoe Bottom carjacking

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities say a juvenile has been arrested in an alleged carjacking in Shockoe Bottom Monday night. 

The victim reportedly parked her vehicle in the 00 block of S. 19 Street at about 9 p.m. Police said that’s when five suspects, two of them armed, approached the car from behind and ordered the driver and passenger to get out of the car. 

All of the suspects then got into the vehicle and drove away. 

No one was injured in the incident. 

Several hours later, officers recovered the vehicle in the 700 block of E. 19th Street and a juvenile female was taken into custody. 

8News spoke with locals who live around the area about the incident.

“I’ve been in this area for over five years and I’ve never heard of a carjacking,” said Yannick Poko.

Poko said he couldn’t believe when he heard the news about the reported carjacking that happened in front of his apartment complex. 

“Shocked, definitely would never expect that to happen in this area,” he told 8News. 

Poko said that he hopes this particular incident encourages residents and pedestrians to keep their guard up. 

“You have to be careful,” Poko said, “pay attention to your surroundings, make sure you lock your cars.”
