Police: Richmond woman found face down in tub near bloody knife was murdered

Fairman was a VCU administrator

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Court documents obtained by 8News reveal that the woman who was found dead Thursday night during a welfare check at a Richmond home was found face down in a bathtub near a bloody knife.

Police said Monday afternoon they were investigating 53-year-old Suzanne A. Fairman's death as a homicide.

She worked as an operational administrator for Virginia Commonwealth University, according to the university's website.

Richmond Police were called to the home, located in the 7400 block of Tanglewood Road, on May 9 at 11:07 p.m. for a welfare check of a resident. Once they arrived, they found Fairman who was face down in the tub located in the main bathroom, according to court documents.

The welfare check was prompted because Fairman was supposed to have been traveling to Florida, but never arrived, court documents show.

The affidavit also revealed that water was running and a knife with blood on it was visible on the counter in the same bathroom.

Fairman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court documents listed murder as a reason for the search warrant.

Computers, cell phones, bedding, swabs of red stains, tablets, a knife, gloves, a bandana, and a cord were all taken from the home during the search warrant, according to the affidavit.

“After speaking with family members, detectives hope that providing a photo of Ms. Fairman will prompt people to come forward with any information they may have on this case,” Major Crimes Captain James Laino said in a press release on Saturday. “Any information, no matter how small the detail may be, could assist in solving this case.”

Police said that the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or police at (804) 646-3617.
