SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested a 19-year-old suspect linked to a body that was found in the woods on Monday.

The office said at about 10 p.m. on Feb. 1, deputies located the human remains in the wooded area of Pamunkey and Finney Road in the western part of the county. The victim has since been identified as Dylan Dakota Whetzel, 20, of Stafford.

As of this morning, officials said they are investigating this incident as a homicide. Whetzel’s remains were turned over to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond.

Tuesday morning, the Sheriff’s office said they took Brennan Thomas, 19, of Spotsylvania County, into custody. He has since been arrested and charged with defilement of a dead human body, conspiracy to defile a dead human body, concealment of a dead body, conspiracy to conceal a dead body, conceal or compound evidence and conspiracy to conceal or compound evidence.

Thomas was transported to Rappahannock Regional Jail and is being held without bond.

The Sheriff’s Office did not release any other information about this case, but said they would continue to give updates as they happen.
