(WFLA) — An African pastor baptizing congregation members in a lake was attacked and killed by a crocodile.
Over the weekend, Docho Eshete conducted the ceremony for around 80 people in Lake Abaya in Ethiopia, according to the BBC.
Police said a crocodile jumped out of the water and attacked the pastor during one of the baptisms.
According to reports, Eshete suffered from bites on his legs, back and hands.
Eshete succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save him.
Fishing nets were reportedly thrown into the water to keep the animal from dragging the pastor’s body further into the lake. But, the crocodile escaped.
Lake Abaya is reportedly known for having a large, aggressive crocodile population because of a fish shortage.
The lake’s reddish brown water makes it difficult to spot a crocodile before it surfaces.
