Dominion Virginia Power unveils largest solar panel system in the state

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Taking up 11 acres, with 8,000 solar panels, Dominion Virginia Power unveiled its $4.9 million project Friday that will provide power to about 500 homes during peak output. The company partnered with Philip Morris USA, who provided land next to its recycling plant in Chesterfield County.

“It’s pretty impressive to see that many panels strung together. I’ve never seen an installation like this.” — Greg Ray

“We’re really proud of what we’ve done here and also what we can learn from it and how our community can learn as well,” said Nathan Frost with Dominion Virginia Power.

Frost says the solar panel system will help them learn more about solar energy and its effect on their power grid. The company is aiming to keep making these systems bigger and bigger so solar power becomes a reliable, cost effective option for customers in the future.

“We want to make sure that we continue to maintain a safe reliable affordable energy for our customers,” said Frost.

“It’s pretty impressive to see that many panels strung together. I’ve never seen an installation like this. It’s good to see that we’re actually getting to a place where solar power can be effective,” said Greg Ray with Philip Morris USA.

Ray says they jumped at the opportunity.

“We were excited about it and we certainly asked them to make sure that we could put as large an installation here so that it would actually be the biggest one in the state,” said Ray.

But the solar panel field won’t have that recognition for long. Dominion says they’re already working on a solar panel system in Isle of Wight that will have 200 acres filled with solar panels that will be ready to produce power this year.Find 8News on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram; send your news tips to
