HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A local student-athlete drowned at an area swimming pool Tuesday night.

Henrico Fire officials say they were called to the 5600 block of Crenshaw Road for a reported drowning at 8:45 p.m. The victim was pulled from the bottom of the pool and life-saving measures were initiated. The victim was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation determined that the 16-year-old victim and five other teenagers entered the pool area, which was secured with a fence and a locked gate.

The victim, Shyheem Jackson, was a sophomore at Henrico High School and played football.

“So many people loved him,” said his mother Katrina Jones. “There’s no way you could forget a guy like that. He was just a joy to be around. He would always joke around and make you laugh. I could never be mad at him because he always made me laugh.”

His family says they are trying to understand what happened, especially since Jackson knew how to swim.

“His friends tried everything they could,” his mother said. “They tried.”

“I wish I could have brought my grandson home last night but I know he is God’s hand,” said his grandmother Carolyn Jones.

His best friend, who tried to save him, said he considers Shyheem to be his brother.

“Everything I do, he do,” Tiquan Motley. “Everywhere I go he go. I can’t do nothing without him.”

Motley and Jaackson both played football together. Their coach said the first practice without him was hard.

“Shyheem was a great young man going into his sophomore year here, was going to be a varsity player,” Henrico High School football coach Gerald Glasco said. “He was fun to watch. You couldn’t touch him in a phone booth.

“I was looking forward to having him for the next three years, but I know he’ll be watching over us and making sure we’ll be doing right things on and off the field.”

Officials said they do not suspect foul play.

The family is planning a vigil at Henrico High School for friends to remember Shyheem.
