GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The parents of the Wake Forest teenager who survived a rip current over the weekend say her brain was too severely damaged.

Paige Merical’s father, John Merical, posted on Facebook late Wednesday saying they made the decision to let her go.

The 17-year-old was swimming on Emerald Isle Beach with her friend, 18-year-old Ian Lewis, last Friday, when they got caught in a rip current and weren’t able to get out.

Officials say Paige was underwater for over 10 minutes before being rescued.

She was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where she was unresponsive for several days.

Her father’s post adds that Paige will be an organ donor with the donation on Saturday.

John Merical also asks people who want to help his family to donate to the “Prayers For Paige” Go Fund Me fundraiser to help with Paige’s medical expenses.
