First responders celebrate Valor Awards


RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Today local first responders are celebrating some big honors.  The Retail Merchants Association presented its 27th annual Valor Awards at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.  Recipients were recognized for going above and beyond in the line of duty.

Richmond Police Department Officers Ryan Bailey, Matthew Cavanaugh, Jacob DeBoard, Ryan Donald, Darryl Lee and Brady McWhirter received Gold Valor Awards.

Chesterfield County Police Department Officer First Class Chad Shockley received a Silver Valor Award, along with Lt. Ted Brown, Firefighter Luther Drummond, Firefighter James Fletcher, Capt. Richmond Grassel, Firefighter Samuel Long, Firefighter Jacob Newton, Firefighter Donald Nobles, Lt. Kevin Rochelle and Capt. Nicholas Smith from Chesterfield County Fire & EMS.

Bronze Valor Awards went to Firefighter Linwood Humphries and Firefighter Nathan Wolz from Chesterfield County Fire & EMS; Officers Chad Byerly, Gabriel Percival and Randall Sykes from Chesterfield County Police Department; Investigators Matthew McGrain and David Parrish from Hanover County Sheriff’s Office; Officer Alfonzo Joyner from Richmond Police Department; Sgt. Ian McAllister from VCU Police Department.

Former Henrico County Police Chief Doug Middleton was honored for his service.

Doug Middleton, who left his post as the Henrico County Chief of Police in April, accepted an award for his 43 years in public safety.  Middleton is the current Deputy County Manager for Public Safety in Henrico.

Michelle Dermyer, the widow of Virginia State Police Trooper Chad Dermyer, was on hand to accept a posthumous award for his service.

On March 31, Trooper Dermyer was fatally shot by James Brown III at the Richmond Greyhound bus station, where police were holding a counter-terrorism training exercise. Brown, of Aurora, Illinois, was killed by two other state troopers after he opened fire.
