NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH/KRON/AP) – Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department say they’re conducting tests on a knife found on O.J. Simpson’s old property and forensic expert Dr. Henry Lee, who testified at his trial in the mid 1990s, thinks it could be a game changer.

Dr. Lee, who currently works as member of the faculty at the University of New Haven, told 8News’ sister station WTNH over the phone, about the development.

“To think that it would have any relevance whatsoever to circumstances surrounding the OJ Simpson case to me is outrageous. I would rather be talking about the Easter Bunny for goodness sake.” — Former Simpson attorney Carl Douglas

“If say, you know, the biological evidence, if this knife was preserved well, we can still find biological evidence,” said Lee. “A hair or fiber evidence if this wasn’t exposed to heavy rain or soaking water may have something there.”

The knife authorities said at a news conference Friday was obtained by a now retired member of the force who got it from a construction worker who had worked in the area of Simpson’s estate. The date the knife was recovered has not been released.

Over the years there have been several knives found in Simpson’s former neighborhood, none however have been able to link Simpson to any crime. It’s not clear if this latest discovery will be any different, but when News 8’s Josh Scheinblum asked Dr. Lee if he thinks Simpson was responsible for the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend, he told him to just look at the evidence.

“My opinion is in the testimony,” said Lee. “I only testify on scientific evidence. In my book I did mention he could be involved. Whether or not he’s the killer, we don’t know.”

KRON, 8News’ sister station in San Francisco, spoke with another member of OJ Simpson’s “Dream Team” of defense attorneys. Carl Douglas, one of Simpson’s attorneys in 1995, called the story ridiculous and said it is time for people to move on.

“To think that it would have any relevance whatsoever to circumstances surrounding the OJ Simpson case to me is outrageous,” Douglas said. “I would rather be talking about the Easter Bunny for goodness sake.”

Douglas said he thinks his former client would be “chuckling” at all the new developments.

The findings of the knife are not likely to change the verdict because of double jeopardy laws.

The knife is being analyzed by Los Angeles police for any possible connection to the 1994 stabbing deaths of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. According to the Associated press, here’s what we know about the discovery:

KNIFE EMERGES: Detectives are investigating a claim that the knife was found at Simpson’s former home years ago, possibly during demolition of the property. It was turned over to a now-retired motorcycle police officer who was working as a security guard at a filming location, police said. The knife came to light in the past month, but authorities did not say how, stressing that the authenticity of the account had not been confirmed. The weapon used in the killings has been a mystery for more than two decades.

THE SLAYINGS: The killings occurred June 12, 1994. The former football star was acquitted in October 1995 by a jury that deliberated only four hours. In 1997, a civil court jury found Simpson liable for the slayings and awarded millions of dollars to the victims’ families.

POSSIBLE CRIMINAL CHARGES: The Los Angeles Police Department was looking into whether criminal charges could be filed against the former officer who held onto the knife. As for Simpson, even if the knife is linked to the killings, he is unlikely to be charged again because of legal protections against double jeopardy. Simpson is imprisoned in Nevada for a 2008 armed robbery and kidnapping conviction.

O.J. Simpson is currently serving a 33 year sentence in a Nevada prison for his role in a botched robbery back in 2007.
