HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Henrico County Employee is hanging up his hat after 73 years at the same job.
Elvin Cosby is retiring from the Henrico County Department of Public Works.
County leaders dedicated a road to the Cosby for being the county’s longest-serving employee last year.
This year fellow employees, family members, and friends gathered to help celebrate another milestone.
Cosby joined the Department of Public Works in April 1946. Back then he made 55 cents an hour carrying water to mules.
Since then he has been a truck driver, equipment operator, and labor foreman.
People who attended the ceremony called it a ‘special occasion’ for the county. They say it’s important for young people to see a man like Cosby who demonstrates a strong work ethic.
Cosby told 8News why he chose to retire now.
“I want to enjoy my wife and grandchildren,” Cosby said. “I want to just travel around…it just hit me all at once to retire.”
Henrico leaders are designating April 30 as ‘Elvin Cosby Day.’
