'Think of why she was here': Charlottesville memorial honors rally victim

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- On the one-year anniversary of Heather Heyer's death, her family came to pay their respects and offer one simple message.

"Please remember not to think of Heather, but think of why she was here," said Susan Bro, Heather's mother.

It was an emotional afternoon at the downtown mall as hundreds gathered to honor and remember Heather in the spot where she was killed one year ago.

Bro spoke to the crowd about remaining strong, being peaceful and helping others in need. The exact things that Heather cared so much about.

"She was here to support equality," Bro said. "She was here to support affordable housing. She was here to support taking care of people the way that you would want to be taken care of. The golden rule still applies I don't care how old you are. Do unto others as you would do unto you."

And with hug after hug from friends and supporters, Susan had one more message for what Heather would've wanted if she was still around.

"Focus on the issues," Bro said. "That's exactly what Heather would say. Quit looking at me, look at the issues."
