RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A 3-year-old who has spent their entire life in the hospital is finally heading home next month.

Samantha Lynn McCann has been hospitalized at VCU Medical Center for three years.

Her mother told 8News that when she is not visiting, she is missing the small, unpredictable moments of her daughter’s life.

“Her first tooth, her first haircut, her first word, I’m missing out on all of that, so it really really hurts,” Jamie McCann said.

But now, Samantha McCann is ready to leave the hospital.

“I lived here,” the young girl said. “I didn’t want to leave.”

Her parents and six brothers can’t wait to bring the toddler home. The family lives in Wavery and has had to travel over an hour to visit at VCU Medical.

“I want her to experience everything out there,” McCann said.

McCann has intestinal lung disease and is unable to walk alone. She takes her food through a tube and relies on a ventilator.

At the moment there is no cure for her condition and someday she will need a double lung replacement. However, next month, if her health permits, she will finally be able to leave the hospital.

“I’ve been dreaming of this every day,” Jamie McCann said.

The medical expenses have piled up for the family of nine. The McCann’s have to find an affordable and wheelchair accessible place to live by next month.

The family has sent up a GoFundMe in order to help with expenses.
