Area school districts bumping up pay to attract more bus drivers

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)  — Area school districts are upping the ante to attract bus drivers.

The jobs are difficult to fill, so desperate districts are putting more money on the table.

“Well who wouldn’t want to make more money,” says Lina Price, a school bus driver for Henrico County Public Schools, “It’s nice to be recognized and compensated for doing the job well done.”

Henrico just bumped up drivers’ pay to $14.18 an hour. That’s nearly a 5% increase.

“When somebody thinks do I want to be a bus driver, they’re going to want to know what the pay is,” explains HCPS Pupil Transportation Director Josh Davis.

He explains the district hopes higher pay will help it hold on to drivers and attract new ones.
There are dozens of spots to fill.

“There’s lots of great reasons to work for Henrico,” adds Davis, “But our pay needs to be competitive to attract those folks.”

Chesterfield County Public Schools recently bumped up bus driver pay too.
This fall, they’ll earn $14.41 an hour.

In Richmond, the city council just approved a 10% increase for its school bus drivers.

They’ll earn a comparable $14.36 driving for Hanover County Public Schools.

But if you ask a bus driver, the job is about more than money.
There are perks for parents like Price whose schedule matches her children’s.

“You have weekends off when they do. You have Christmas break. You have spring break,” explains Price, “If you have snow days because of school being out, then you don’t have to find a babysitter because if they’re off, you’re off.”

Henrico County Public Schools is holding a job fair on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Workforce Resource Center, 121 Cedar Fork Rd.

The division is seeking bus drivers. Qualified bus driver candidates will be paid during training.
