HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — After Henrico Police acknowledged they are looking into a possible sexual offense at the Tuckaway Child Development and Early Education Center in Varina, local parents told 8News they were blindsided.
The accusation against a staff member may have shocked parents last week but 8News learned that some might also be surprised by the center’s lengthy list of state violations.
State inspection reports for Varina’s Tuckaway Child Care Center shows dozens of visits and plenty of violations.
As recently as December, the facility was cited by the state because it, “did not ensure that medication shall be kept in a locked place, that prevents access by children.” The daycare also received a notice because the medication, “did not have information for the dosage amount of times to be administered attached.”
Last October, the department wrote up Tuckaway for 19 violations. The violations varied from not having proof of children’s immunizations to not strapping in an infant at the feeding table.
An inspection report from last spring said a video watched by state inspectors showed a staff member who was, “jerking the child by his hood while kicking the child’s feet out from under him causing the child to fall.”
The staff member in the video was fired and the employee being investigated for the alleged sexual assault is on leave.
Parents are encouraged to do their homework before sending their child to a daycare facility. All complaints and violations are public record and can be found online.
