RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As the East Coast prepares for Hurricane Florence, Virginia Blood Services is asking people around the Commonwealth to donate blood before the storm hits.

VBS needs people to donate early to ensure the state’s blood supply remains at adequate levels. Blood is needed not only for those who may be impacted by the storm, but for patients undergoing surgery, receiving treatment for cancer or needing blood on a regular basis.

While all blood types are needed, there is a particular need for O-negative and O-positive donors. Platelet donations are also in demand as platelets are only useable for 5 days.

Virginia Blood Services expects blood drives to be canceled and several donor centers to be closed as early as Thursday due to heavy winds and rain.

To find a donor center near you, visit www.vablood.org or call Virginia Blood Services at (800) 989-4438.
