Chesterfield County inmate found unresponsive, dies

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Authorities say an inmate of the Chesterfield County jail died Thursday night.

Deputies and medical staff responded to the cell of 45-year-old James P. Frazier, of Richmond, for a medical emergency.

The staff then immediately began emergency medical procedures, including administering Narcan, which is used to treat narcotic overdoses.

Chesterfield Fire and EMS soon after responded and transported Frazier to St. Francis Medical Center, where he later died.

Although Narcan was administered on Frazier, authorities could not confirm that he overdosed. Officials say deputies were aware of his history when they administered the Narcan.

Frazier entered the jail on Wednesday night for violating terms of his probation for a previous conviction for possession of heroin.

His body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the official cause of death.
