Cause of fire at Chester landfill under investigation

Chesterfield County

CHESTER, Va. (WRIC) — Fire crews battled a blaze at the Shoosmith Sanitation Landfill on Lewis Road in Chester on Monday.

Chesterfield Fire told 8News that more than a dozen units responded to the fire.

Vice President of Shoosmith Bros Inc., J. Fletcher Kelly, said that cardboard caught on fire outside of an independent business on their property.

The fire spread into the building and caused minor damage, according to Chesterfield Fire.

“They did call for a second alarm due to the heavy winds, the dry conditions and the large commercial structure,” Sal Luciano, Chesterfield Fire’s Batallion Chief, told 8News. “Luckily, the material is more of a cardboard it’s not trash, it’s a recycling center so it’s more of a cardboard so there shouldn’t be any concern.”

Chesterfield Police said Lewis Road was temporarily shut down from the turn lanes from Iron Bridge to Bradley Bridge roads.

No one was injured in the fire and firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in just over 50 minutes.

“It’s a dangerous situation, we have a lot of units coming from different directions and we also had a lot of smoke coming across Lewis Road here from the area of origin,” Luciano said.

Before fire crews arrived, the employees at Shoosmith were already working to keep the flames from spreading.

“The facility is over an acre and we have a forest around us that can lead, you know, a fire. And it is very light, dry today and the winds 12-15 miles per hour and so it’s about containment,” said Kelly.

It was not immediately clear how the fire began. The same building caught on fire earlier in February, leaving extensive damage inside the building.
