RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Chesterfield County and Hopewell City Police Departments are now accepting applications for their own Citizens Police Academies.

Chesterfield Summer Citizens Police Academy

According to a Chesterfield County Police Department press release, this session of the Chesterfield Citizens Police Academy is one of five to take place this year. It runs from May 12 to June 23.

Applications, which can be found here, are due by May 6.

During the program, participants will:

  • Learn about specialized police units, including forensics, K-9 and SWAT
  • Conduct traffic stop scenarios with the Traffic Safety Section
  • Ride with a police officer on patrol (if desired)
  • Participate in scenarios (if desired)
  • Learn about officer accountability from the Office of Professional Standards and County Attorney

In order to take part in the academy, applicants must be adults who reside, own a business or belong to a civic organization in Chesterfield County.

Applicants will be screened for activities that may disqualify them from participating.

Hopewell Citizens Police Academy

Hopewell just announced their very first Citizens Police Academy. This eight week program takes place every Wednesday from April 20 to June 8.

Applications can be found here and must be submitted in person at Police Headquarters, 150 W. Randolph Rd. Hopewell, Va. Space is limited.

According to a Hopewell Police Department press release, the purpose of this program is “to strengthen understanding and communication between our agency and our community.”

During the Hopewell program, participants will be provided with an opportunity to better their understanding of how officers are trained and their actual work environment.

Courses include criminal investigations, decision making, traffic stops, building community partnerships and other related subjects.
