CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) — A Chesterfield man was awarded $1 million on Friday after winning the Virginia Lottery’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle.
The winning ticket was bought at a Chesterfield Sheetz, where people have been talking all week about who won the money.
The winner, Rob Oeur, spoke with 8News after picking up the check. Oeur told 8News he rarely plays the lottery.
2019 has gotten off to a great start for Oeur. On Jan. 4, he was presented with a $1 million check after becoming one of three in the Commonwealth to win the lottery’s raffle.
“My birthday is actually in three days so this is an early birthday gift,” Oeur told 8News.
It all started a few days after Thanksgiving when he walked into the gas station.
“It was just a spur of the moment thing,” Oeur said. “I was at the Sheetz getting a pack of cigarettes and something in me said go and get some tickets.”
One of the two tickets Oeur bought was a perfect match.
He said he didn’t expect to win and a co-worker was the one who alerted him that a winning ticket was sold at the local Sheetz. Oeur checked his ticket immediately.
“Reached into my nightstand, grabbed the tickets out,” he explained, “two tickets I had bought, 40 dollars. First ticket, not a winner. Second ticket I had to go back over it eight times just to verify that I won before I messaged her back. And to this day, it’s still surreal that I won it.”
8News asked Oeur what his early plans are with the money.
“Just paying off my debt and then with the rest of it, figure it out later,” he said.
The Sheetz that sold the ticket was awarded $10,000 from the Virginia Lottery.
