Driver charged after overturned tractor-trailer closes I-95 North in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) -- The driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned on I-95 North, spilling its load in the process, has been charged, according to police. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Police say just after 6:35 p.m., a 2005 Freightliner tractor hauling a trailer full of wood chips and mulch, was attempting to make a lane change to the right and struck a Mazda 3 on the driver's side.

As a result, the tractor-trailer lost control before flipping onto its left side and skidding across the left lane and shoulder. The load spilled into the southbound side of I-95.

Police say the driver of the tractor, Jeremiah Perry, 32, of Newport News, was wearing his seat belt. The driver and a passenger of the Mazda 3 were also properly restrained and did not sustain injuries.

Chesterfield Fire says the overturned tractor-trailer was also leaking fuel.

All lanes of I-95 north at Chippenham Parkway reopened at about midnight.
