CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) — Community members said on Wednesday they were surprised that police are investigating a deadly shooting in Chesterfield.
One resident told 8News that police cruisers flooded Ronaldton Road around 11 p.m. as officers searched backyards in the neighborhood.
“Around in this neighborhood, you don’t really hear things like that,” said Chesterfield resident Tyreek Wise. “It’s just crazy.”
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Tavario Gates, died after being taken to a nearby gas station by two people. 8News learned that Gates was shot on Ronaldton Road and then driven to the Minit Mart on Courthouse Rd.
Chris Miller said he heard the gunshots but thought it was just someone knocking on his door.
“I heard four really loud bangs,” Miller said, “thought maybe it was someone had just shown up randomly, but I walked outside, I saw nothing. I kind of locked my doors, I was freaking out.”
Miller told 8News he’s been living on Ronaldton Road for three years and says nothing like this has ever happened.
“It’s one of those things that it’s so unusual. I immediately was like there’s just no way, you know, it’s weird but hopefully, it’s also a one-time thing,” Miller said. “It’s really unusual in this place, but it’s something that I didn’t think happened around here.”
Footage from the gas station’s security camera shows the moments after a car arrived in its parking lot late Tuesday night. The clerk of the Minit Mart did not wish to be on camera but did allow 8News to view the security tape.
Two people jumped out of a black car and ran inside the station for help from the store clerk. Gates, who police said was shot on Ronaldton Road, was in the backseat of the car at the time. The video showed the clerk call authorities for help and at one point, shows one of the people from the car take the phone from the clerk to speak with police.
Both people from the car were also seen running around the parking lot, jumping up and down in distress and checking back on Gates in the backseat.
Police are investigating the shooting and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
