CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond community came together on Sunday to remember one of the state troopers killed in a helicopter crash last August.
Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen was honored with a bike trail dedication at Pocahontas State Park, a place family members say he loved and would be celebrating his birthday. A bike trail was officially named as Blue Jay Way.
“I know he’d be proud of this one,” Lt Cullen’s son, Ryan Cullen, said. “He’ll always be in memory whenever people are riding and he’ll carry on the legacy that he brought of getting people into riding, teaching people how to ride bikes and getting more kids on bikes.”
Ryan Cullen was the first to ride the trail in memory of his father, who was one of the two VSP troopers killed in a helicopter crash while monitoring the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville.
Along with his family and work, Lt. Cullen was passionate about cycling, and he wanted to share that love with others, family members say.
“This is right in his backyard,” Lt. Cullen’s bother, Glenn Cullen, said. “This is what he loved to do, day-in-and-day-out — help people, ride his bike and enjoy the outdoors and the wilderness. That’s what I remember about my own brother.”
Another dedication took place for Lt. Cullen back in February, when Virginia State Police renamed their aviation hangar at the Chesterfield County Airport in his honor.
