CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A senior living complex in Chesterfield County has reached a settlement with a resident who says she was sexually harassed by another resident.
In September 2015, a female resident of The Park at Ridgedale Independent Living said a neighbor sexually harassed her and other female residents. She alleged the neighbor made numerous advances against her, making sexually suggestive comments, catcalling her, and making physical approaches towards her in the common areas.
She reported the incidents to the complex management, TRG Management Company, LLP, and the Chesterfield County Police Department. She also contacted the fair housing non-profit HOME (Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia, Inc.).
HOME says TRG Management never took corrective action with the offending tenant and refused to renew the woman’s lease due to her complaints.
HOME filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). To settle the claim, TRG will pay the resident $37,500 in damages. They also agreed to adopt a sexual harassment policy and develop procedures for responding to tenant complaints of sexual harassment.
They have also agreed to provide fair housing training to all employees who have direct contact with tenants and to hold a community meeting at The Park at Ridgedale to discuss fair housing and sexual harassment policies with residents.
