Investigation underway after man shot, killed in Colonial Heights

Local News

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — A man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning at Clearfield Apartments in Colonial Heights.

Authorities are investigating after they responded to a burglary call around 2 a.m in the 100 block of Clearfield Circle. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Colonial Heights Police Department identified Keith B. Tyler, 56, of Prince George County as the man who was killed.

Deputy Chief of Police Major W.H. Anspach told 8News that officers said this appeared to be an altercation and not a burglary inside the apartment. As the altercation progressed, the victim was shot.

Major Anspach said that during the time of the incident there were four people inside the apartment. A woman inside had an active order of protection against the man who was killed.

Police arrested 37-year-old Zechariah Grant of Hopewell and charged him with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Grant is being held at Riverside Regional Jail without bond pending his next court appearance.

Police believe Grant is the son of the woman with the protection order.
