Driver charged after log truck overturns, spills load in Nottoway County

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver has been charged after a log truck overturned, closing a road in Nottoway County Monday afternoon.

Virginia State Police say the accident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on Deep Creek Road, roughly 1.5 miles south of Bible Road.

As the driver was exiting out of a curve, police say he ran off the road to the left, striking a guardrail and a portion of a bridge. The truck then came back onto the roadway and overturned, losing its load.

The driver, who has been identified as 60-year-old Alfred J. Johnson, of Dewitt, was wearing his seat belt and suffered minor injuries, according to police. He was charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain control.

"The roadway has been closed for an extended period of time with the assistance of VDOT," VSP said in a release shortly after 4 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
