CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Police have charged a man with reckless driving after rear-ending a Chesterfield fire truck Sunday morning. 

Just before 11:45 a.m., emergency crews responded to the area of Chippenham Parkway and Hopkins Road for a two-vehicle crash involving a Chesterfield Fire Engine.

“We’re there to keep your family safe, but we need you to help keep our family safe too,” said Chesterfield Fire and EMS Asst. Chief Matt Coffin.

State Police say the fire truck was blocking the right lane while assisting with a previous crash at the same location. That’s when a 2012 Honda Civic, driven by, Joseph N. Clary, 40, of Chester, Va., was traveling northbound on Route 150 and struck the fire engine in the rear, spinning the Honda around into the middle lane.  

“They heard a loud crash and looked back to discover that their fire engine had been run into by a passenger vehicle,” Coffin said.

All firefighters are OK. Clary was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

But Coffin warns this could’ve been much worse, “Today’s just another example for the need of new regard for those folks who are passing by, who are driving. We’re there for you, and if something happens to us we can’t get to your loved ones.”

Northbound lanes on Chippenham Parkway were shut down. A HAZMAT team has been called following reports of fuel leaking from the fire truck.

“When you see the lights, whether their blue, red or yellow, follow the law and move over,” said Clary.

Clary was also charged with driving on a suspended license.
