PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A hazmat team responded to a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 95 north near mile marker 43 in Prince George County Thursday morning.

According to state police, a tractor that was hauling several thousand pounds of scrap metal and helicopter parts ran off the road to the right side, hit a guardrail and struck trees. The crash happened at about 6:50 a.m.

The driver, 34-year-old Sherri E. Thompson, of New York, and a passenger were entrapped for a period of time, but was checked at the scene and did not suffer injuries. Thompson was wearing her seat belt and the passenger was not, according to state police.

Thompson has been charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain control.

The right lane and right shoulder of I-95 north will be closed for an “extended period of time for cleanup,” state police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
