ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An exotic tick, known as the East Asian or Longhorned tick, was found on a cattle farm in Albemarle County.

The Haemaphysalis longicornis tick was initially found in New Jersey in 2017 on a sheep farm.

Virginia state veterinary officials are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to determine the scope and significance of the finding.

Owners or producers of livestock should notify the VDACS if they notice any ticks that are not usually seen or haven’t been seen before.

Livestock owners also may contact VDACS’ Office of Veterinary Services at 804.786.2483.
