Family: Body found in James River identified as missing Richmond man

Local News

RICHMOND (WRIC) – The body of a 61-year-old man who was reported missing out of Richmond last week was found in the James River, near Rocketts Landing, Monday afternoon.

Richmond Police say they received a call around 12 p.m. about a body in the river. Once on the scene, crews pulled the body out from the water.

Family members told 8News the deceased is Abraham Jones, who was reported missing last Wednesday morning after he was last seen leaving a business on Cofer Road

Richmond Police identified Jones in a release shared with 8News on Monday night.

Last week family members called his disappearance out of the ordinary, saying it wasn’t like him not to return home without notice.

The body was found near Rocketts Landing, near the Rocketts Landing marina, according to police sources.

Fire and Rescue crews were called for a possible water rescue near the Powhite Parkway bridge over the James River earlier Monday morning, but it’s not clear if the two calls are related.

Richmond and Henrico are both investigating.

Richmond Police’s Public Information Officer James Mercante spoke with 8News about the investigation.

“Detectives have not released any information on whether they think it is foul play or not,” Mercante said.
