Fundraiser for tornado victims shut down after scamming attempt

Local News

FRANKLIN CO., Va. (WRIC) — Friday marked one week since Larry and Delores Anderson lost their home after a tornado tore through Franklin County.

The community rallied behind the family. An online fundraiser for the Anderson family raised nearly $43,000. It had to be shutdown due to scam attempts.

Family members told WFXR News the fundraiser had become compromised by scammers trying to take advantage of the community’s support.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, someone began to personal message people and try to get them to purchase Amazon e-cards to donate to Larry and Delores. Investigators said the purchase of the e-cards was the scam.
