ASHLAND, Va. (WRIC) — The Ashland Theatre finally opened back up on Wednesday after years of renovation.
Simple tasks, like vacuuming, were still being done minutes before the doors opened. 8News went to the theater on Wednesday to meet people who bought tickets for today’s showing of “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Early reviews from locals were positive.
“It’s magnificent. It’s a total transformation really. From the lobby area to the seats and just the interior here, it’s just gorgeous,” Jason Grande told 8News.
“It’s wonderful to see the changes,” said Heather Grande. “They’re beautiful. The seats are already lovely. It’s nice to be in a small town theatre to leave your purse, go get the snack, come back and enjoy a show.”
“Mary Poppins Returns” will be shown at the theater until Jan. 13, when it will be replaced by other films and shows.
Generations have gone through the theater’s doors, hoping the charm of the Ashland Theatre will reach people beyond city limits.
“Well, I think more and more people are learning about Ashland so it’s really nice to have another draw to the town,” said Sara Edwards, who is visiting Ashland for the holidays. “Personally, I no longer live here so it’s nice to see an old place that I used to go to coming back to life.”
A staple of the community, the Ashland Theatre opened in 1948.
