HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities in Hanover County made a disturbing discovery after responding to a 911 call in Mechanicsville Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 7 a.m., the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a home in the 7500 block of Cold Harbor Road, but the caller hung up.
Deputies then responded to the home, but no one answered the door. It was unlocked, so deputies went inside and found the bodies of two adult males suffering from obvious signs of trauma.
The men have been identified as a father and son, 59-year-old William Louis Simpson, Jr. and 84-year-old William Louis Simpson.
Sergeant James Cooper with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to 8News on Wednesday that the father shot his son before turning the gun on himself.
“It definitely was sad to hear that,” one neighbor told 8News. “They were both good people.”
Two sisters who said they have lived next to the men for decades said Billy, the son, suffered from both physical and mental health problems.
“I honestly don’t even know a word to describe it,” Christina Duncan said. “I’m just kinda disappointed, saddened; it’s a great loss.”
Elizabeth Smith added, “It’s really sad, you know, and it just makes you realize how short life really is and that you never know when your time is up.”
