Hanover firefighter killed in crash on I-295; driver charged

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One firefighter was killed and three others were injured after a tractor-trailer hit their firetruck on I-295 Thursday night.

Hanover County Fire-EMS was responding to a crash on I-295 South, near exit 38, around 9 pm. Thursday when a tractor-trailer rear-ended the fire engine, according to Virginia State Police.

Lieutenant Brad Clark was pronounced dead on the scene. Another firefighter has life-threatening injuries, and two others have serious injuries.

“Please join Hanover County Fire-EMS as we mourn the death of Lieutenant Brad Clark and keep his family and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers,” Hanover County Fire-EMS said in a statement.

The tractor-trailer driver, 49-year-old Lester Labarge, of California, Md., had to be pulled out of the cab of his truck and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but officials say he is expected to be OK. For now, he’s been charged with reckless driving and cited for defective breaks. Additional charges are pending. 

It was raining at the time of the crash, and State Police are investigating if the weather was a factor. Sgt. Keeli Hill tells 8News charges are pending.
