CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WRIC) — A Hanover County man drowned on Friday along Bogue Banks in Atlantic Beach while reportedly helping his daughters caught in a rip current.

Just before 7:15 p.m., Atlantic Beach emergency responders received a call to the public beach south of the Circle. When emergency responders arrived, they found 48-year-old Charles Austin Joy in cardiac arrest.

Atlantic Beach Fire and EMS Chief Adam Snyder said they performed advanced cardiac life support but were unable to get a response. Joy was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

Bystanders at the scene later contacted Mike Shutak with the Carteret County News-Times saying the man had swum out because his two daughters had been caught in a rip current. His daughters were reportedly safely brought back to shore.

Sydner said yellow flags were posted on Friday, which warn beachgoers to swim with caution. He also said the incident happened after the period lifeguards were on duty.
