HANOVER, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities in Hanover County arrested a 23-year-old Mechanicsville man who was spotted near the intersection of Atlee Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike on Tuesday covering his face and holding a sword.

According to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the scene at 12:23 p.m. and located the subject, identified as Stephon R. Carpenter, with a bandana covering his face and holding a sword.

When deputies arrived, Carpenter walked into the intersection. Authorities said commands were given to Carpenter, who eventually complied and was detained peacefully.

Deputies learned that the sword Carpenter had was plastic, authorities said.

The incident was captured on Facebook in a video 8News obtained on Tuesday night.

The video shows a Hanover deputy armed with a taser telling Carpenter to put down the sword.

Carpenter was then arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and wearing a mask in public.
