HENRICO Co., Va. (WRIC) — A homicide investigation is underway after someone opened fire on a Henrico County home Wednesday, killing an infant and leaving a man fighting for his life in the hospital.
Henrico County Police said they received a call for a shooting at a home on the 500 block of Fayette Ave. at around 2:30 a.m.
Officers located two victims who had been shot; both were transported to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. One of the victims, a 1-year-old baby who family members identified as Jaidah Morris, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
The incident has left the surrounding community shaken. Neighbors recall hearing the gunshots — at least six of them — and then a distraught mother who was inconsolable after realizing her baby had been shot.
“I heard her saying, ‘my daughter was shot, I really need help,'” neighbor Dietrich Wingfield said. “‘Oh my God, my daughter got shot. Please help me.'”
Wingfield, who lives next door to where the shooting occurred, dove to the floor when he heard gunshots ring out. Moments later, he heard the wail of a mother in agony.
“That’s really sad when you see a young child, innocent child, you know, don’t have anything to do with it or anything, just trying to grow up,” Wingfield added.
Police arrived and EMT rushed Morris to the hospital, but it was too late. Family members said the young girl’s father was also seriously hurt.
“He sat down on the porch and he was like, ‘I’ve been shot too. I’ve been shot in my stomach. I feel like I’m going to faint,'” Wingfield explained.
Officers spent more than nine hours canvassing the scene, identifying shell casings and hoping police K-9s may offer some leads.
It appears the gunman fired through one window, the one where Morris and her family were sleeping.
Investigators aren’t offering any motives at this time.
