HENRICO, Va. (WRIC-TV) — Imagine living your entire life as an only child then learning you have a surprise sibling.
It happened to Billy Lucord.
“I’m hoping that she’s not disappointed,” said the 78-year-old Henrico man hours before a birthday party for the sister he’d never met.
“I’ve seen her in pictures,” adds Billy, “Is she tall? Is she short? I don’t know.”
While growing up in Lakeside, the son of Bill and Pearl always wondered what it would be like to have a sibling.
“I’ve always wanted a sister. Always had a sister, just didn’t know it,” he explains.
Lucord learned he has a big sister, Jane Lassiter.
Jane was put up for adoption before Billy was born.
Last year, she came across some paperwork her adoptive father had given her decades earlier.
It had her birth mother’s name on it.
Jane’s daughter Debbie did some digging on Ancestry.com which suggested her mother had a sibling.
“She called one day and she said ‘Guess what, you have a brother’ and I’m like, you’re kidding,” recalls Jane.
They searched the internet for more information, which eventually led them to Billy.
On Jane’s 81st birthday, she flew in from Texas to meet her baby brother and catch up on decades missed.
“I would have probably been bossy,” jokes Jane.
“Aren’t big sisters always bossy,” retorts Billy.
“My kids think so,” adds Jane.
The brother and sister still have a lot of questions.
They don’t know why Jane was put up for adoption although their parents weren’t married until 17 days after she was born.
Pearl Lucord worked as a nurse at the same hospital as Jane’s adoptive mother. Beyond that, the newly acquainted sister and brother are still trying to figure it all out.
“I think it was truly the Lord that brought us together,” says Billy. “Man had separated but God had united.”
