HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico residents filed a petition and launched a Facebook page to change the name of White Oak Creek Drive in February.
The move came just a few weeks after 8News first investigated complaints about truck traffic on White Oak Road.
On April 9, a tweet from the Henrico County Government confirmed that the board of supervisors approved a resolution to rename a section of White Oak Creek Drive to Technology Creek Drive. An additional tweet from the county shared the reasoning behind the board’s decision:
Residents who live on White Oak Road told 8News they’re fed up with 18 wheelers coming down their street. They’re supposed to be heading to a distribution center on a street with a very similar name — White Oak Creek Drive.
The residents believe that’s confusing the truck drivers and GPS.
“The problem is there are six streets in this area that are named White Oak,” Henrico resident Stewart Goodwin explained.
Since our story first ran, County Commissioner Tyrone Nelson — as promised — reached out to the County Manager John Vithoulkas to see if the county would change the name of White Oak Creek Drive.
8News got a copy of the County Manager’s letter. Vithoulkas said it couldn’t be done.
He said they investigated this and it would create a significant and unwanted impact to business owners on White Oak Creek Drive. They would have to reprint stationery and business cards.
In response, White Oak Road residents started a petition and Facebook page to change the name of White Oak Creek Drive. The residents said White Oak Road is a narrow, rural road and sometimes these tractor trailers get stuck and cause damage.
