HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Henrico County neighborhood is on edge after two teenagers were killed in a shooting Thursday afternoon.

Roughly a dozen police cruisers rushed to the scene after police were called to a reported shooting in the 200 block of Airport Place, near Highland Springs High School, at around 12:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Officers discovered that 18-year-old Leona Samlall and 18-year-old Vanessa Zaman had been shot. Both later died from their injuries.

There is now a memorial set up just feet away from where the two teens were shot.

A mother of five who lives at the nearby Oakmeade Apartments spoke with 8News about the shooting.

“It’s really heartbreaking for any mother, father, aunt, uncle, and it’s not just affecting the parents, it’s affecting the entire community, because we’re all out here worried and stressed as to what exactly happened and we have to live here,” Schmere Scott said.

Two women were killed in a shooting on the 200 block of Airport Place on Thursday afternoon, according to a release from Henrico Police.

Police have confirmed with 8News they are searching for 39-year-old Abdool Z. Zaman in connection to the deadly shooting of two 18-year-old girls.

Henrico Police say this was not a random shooting, but they have not yet made an arrest. 8News has confirmed that Zaman is the father of one of the deceased teens.

Neighbors told 8News the victims did not live at the Oakmeade Apartments. One of the victims attended Highland Springs High School a couple years ago, but eventually withdrew from the district.

Highland Springs High was placed on lockdown as a precaution. Henrico Police worked with school administrators to get all students home safely.

Anyone with information is asked to call Henrico Police at 501-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
