CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police are still investigating the death of a woman who was found lying in the middle of a road in Caroline County. Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about the 64-year-old’s death to come forward.
Police say the woman was lying in the roadway in the 13000 block of Fredericksburg Turnpike (Route 2) at around 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 1 when she was struck by a vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that the woman — who has been identified as Beverly Shelton of Woodford — may have been crossing Route 2 on her way to her mailbox. State Police are trying to determine the exact sequence of events to determine if Shelton fell in the roadway prior to being struck by a vehicle.
Several motorists who noticed the woman stopped to render aid, but she died at the scene, according to police.
