Learn helpful 'snow hacks' ahead of potential winter storm

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) -- With a potential snow storm coming to Central Virginia, 8News has provided some "snow hacks" to make sure locals don't get stuck this weekend.

It's not just shovels and ice scrapers, everyday items you find at the grocery store can help you make it through the snow.

Some Chesterfield locals who spoke with 8News said they love the snow.

"I want it all," Chesterfield resident, Kristie Dotson, told 8News. "I am a teacher, so I am ready for a little snow break."

Others told 8News they hate it.

"Snow period," another local, Travis Watkins, said, "I'm not a huge fan of it."

Either way, snowfall is making its way to the region and drivers are hoping to avoid a repeat of last month's storm.

"I am on a steep hill, so last snow storm I had to shovel myself out and my neighbors were cheering me on as I was trying to get out," Dotson said.

Preparation is key, so 8News went to a local grocery store to grab a few items that could come in handy in a storm. Here are a few things you can do with some household items:

  • Believe it or not, having some kitty litter will help you if you happen to find yourself on slippery, icy roadways and your car needs traction.
  • It helps to have a pair of heavy duty socks to put over your shoes to keep yourself from slipping and falling.
  • Consider investing in a windshield cover to save time from scraping off the ice.
  • Your vehicles should be stocked with essential items such as a heavy winter coat, as well as a first aid kit, just in case you find yourself stranded on the road.

"You can't really determine exactly what's gonna come but you wanna also prepare for the worst," Watkins said.

The best bet to avoid any trouble is to stay off the road altogether. If you do have to drive, make sure to be safe, drive slow and allow space between other drivers.
