Local couple forced to cut vacation short to deal with storm damage

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — A couple in Mechanicsville will have to spend their vacation cleaning up debris caused by storm damage.

Trey Clanton and Michael Tresler were excited to spend their vacation in Cancun until they saw a jaw-dropping post on Facebook from their neighbor during their layover in Dallas.

“Woke up at three in the morning and something told me ‘check Facebook’. So I check Facebook and our next door neighbors posted that they had damage from the storm,” Tresler remembered. A tree went through their neighbor’s roof and another tree crushed Clanton and Tresler’s garage and damaged their property.

“Our garage is pretty much a total loss,” explained Clanton. “We kept our items in there. Lawnmowers, snow skis, bicycles, things that we’ve accumulated through the years and probably not going to have those around anymore.”

They told 8News that the difference of seeing the damage in pictures and in person was staggering. ”You could just see the walls split, the frame buckling and the roof just completely crashed through,” Clanton told 8News.

Crews are helping the community clear out debris from the storm.

“It is what it is and we’re taking lemons and making lemonade out of it,” Tresler said.

Clanton and Tresler said it will probably take the rest of the week to clean up everything and they are working with their neighbor to get back things back to normal.
