Local restaurants preparing for NCAA title game

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The University of Virginia is set to play Texas Tech Monday night for the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship, and restaurants throughout Central Virginia are preparing for a crazy night.

“We’ll probably start going on a wait about then because people know how busy we get, so they’ll be shuffling in very early,” said Pizza and Beer of Richmond Asst. GM Jonathan Thatcher.

Despite a 9:20 p.m. tip-off, Home Team Grill on W. Main Street and PBR on W. Cary Street suggest showing up at least an hour early for a solid spot, and customers are excited, too.

“I feel like that never happens,” said Alyssa Miller, a non-UVA fan cheering for UVA. “We always get kicked out really quickly, so I’m really happy that there’s actually a team from Virginia in the finals.”

And the restaurants say to be ready for a packed night when you come out.

“We reached maximum capacity really quickly: had a 195 person wait list … it’s going to be crazy,” Home Team Grill Waitress Annie Miller said. “The people love to watch Virginia.”

And they could care less if UVA is the school they went to or the team they cheer for regularly. Monday night’s game is more about the state than one team.

“I’m definitely pulling for UVA tomorrow … you’ve got to support the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Alyssa Miller.

Again, tip-off is set for 9:20 p.m. and 8News will have full team coverage of the game.
