LUNENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 60-year-old woman was killed after a tree came crashing into her home in the Town of Victoria early Monday morning.
Authorities tell 8News Lena Gaulding died after the tree fell on her home on Park Avenue at around 2:25 a.m. Her family did not wish to speak on camera but did tell 8News on Monday that Gaulding loved to cook, be outdoors and watch baseball.
Her friends and family said they can’t believe the woman they knew with such a big heart is gone. Karen Kallam spoke with 8News on Monday following the loss of her friend.
“It’s still astonishing that a tree can come in on you in a minute,” she said, “even when you’re sleeping.”
Kallam told 8News she has been neighbors with Gaulding for 33 years and they both worked at a shoe factory together.
“That’s how I got to meet her and we’ve been friends ever since,” Kallam explained. Kallam says the scene outside her home is too hard to look at.
“I know it’s going to be horrendous to see just because how life belonged to her and how devastating in a snap it can take you right away,” Kallam said.
Kallam told 8News Gaulding will be missed but always remembered.
“She’s the nicest person, help you in any way,” she said. “I couldn’t say a negative thing about Lena. She’s always been good.”
Other homes in the small town, located in Lunenburg County, were also damaged as storms swept through the region overnight, though no other injuries were reported in that area.
There was, however, another storm-related fatality reported in Stafford County, where a 78-year-old woman was killed after a tree crashed into her home at around 1:45 a.m. An 82-year-old man who was also inside sleeping was injured but suffered only minor injuries.
