POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An infant who was found unresponsive last week in Powhatan County has died, the medical examiner’s office confirmed to 8News on Tuesday.

The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office told 8News an investigation was underway after an infant was found unresponsive on March 27.

Police say crews responded to the 1900 block of Old Tavern Road in reference to a 5-month old infant who had stopped breathing.

CPR was performed and the infant was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, according to a family member who spoke with 8News

An investigation into the circumstances of the infant’ death is ongoing.

A family member told 8News that Austin, the baby boy, was on life support after doctors say he suffered trauma to his head. The family believes that trauma came from some type of abuse, while he was in the care of his babysitter.

Deputies did not confirm any of the details. At this time, no arrests have been made.

According to the family, the baby had been brain-dead since Wednesday but was on life support because they decided to donate his organs.

This is a developing story. Stay with 8News for updates.
